Outdoor Play and Learning in Elementary Schools: A Critical Participatory Action Research Project
Experienced primary and intermediate teachers in an online community of practice identified a need for accessible outdoor play and learning resources and initiated the idea of a teacher-made website.
What's new
The researchers used critical participatory action research within an online community of practice for outdoor play and learning. Eighteen experienced Kindergarten to Grade 8 teachers from across British Columbia met regularly over six months to share their experiences and practice. Their discussions identified a need for quality resources that every teacher could access. As shared action, the group initiated the concept of a website developed for teachers by teachers experienced in outdoor play and learning.
Why it matters in Aotearoa
Teachers new to EOTC can benefit from experienced colleagues. This study describes how an online network moved from shared experience towards a practical resource, an approach that could suit schools spread across Aotearoa.
Putting it into practice
Set up a regular online meeting for teachers in your cluster or Kāhui Ako who teach outdoors, and agree on one shared resource the group will build together.
How strong is the evidence
This is a participatory action research study with one group of 18 experienced teachers. It reports on the process and the action taken, not on student or wider teacher outcomes.
