Te Waiora - Ngā Tau 0-10

Ministry of Education25 September 2026

The final Te Waiora curriculum presents wellbeing as including taha taiao, with outdoor experiences and kaitiakitanga as part of Māori-medium learning.

What's new

Final Te Marautanga o Aotearoa content is now available. Te Waiora explicitly presents wellbeing as including taha taiao and identifies physical, cultural, recreational, aquatic and outdoor experiences, connections among people, places, living things and the environment, learning through meaningful experiences in te ao tūroa, and responsibility, kaitiakitanga and protection of environmental mauri. Years 9 to 10 implementation is proposed from 2027 and Years 0 to 8 from 2029, subject to formal approval, Gazette publication and further Crown engagement concerning specified kura boards.

Why it matters in Aotearoa

It provides a distinct Māori-medium foundation for outdoor learning that connects whakapapa, waiora, culture, place and environmental responsibility. Resources written for the English-medium curriculum cannot simply be translated for Māori-medium settings.

Putting it into practice

Read Te Pūtake and the teaching sequence, and compare with the English-medium progression before planning any outdoor learning for Māori-medium settings.

How strong is the evidence

Official final curriculum content. Implementation dates are proposed and subject to formal approval and Gazette publication.
