The state of school residentials in England: 2017
The first study of its kind in England found only one in five children experiences a residential each year, and young people in the poorest areas are least likely to go.
What's new
The education think tank LKMco analysed five years of national visit-planning data from about 25,000 schools. It also surveyed teachers about how well their residentials met Learning Away's 'Brilliant Residentials' principles. Residentials were generally of good quality, but access was patchy and inequitable. Only about half of teachers believed their residentials were affordable to all pupils, and many schools treated residentials as an optional extra.
Why it matters in Aotearoa
It offers a benchmark and method for asking who goes on school camp in New Zealand. It also highlights cost and availability as barriers to equitable EOTC.
Putting it into practice
Survey staff and whānau about camp affordability, and publish a clear hardship policy so cost is never the reason a student stays home.
How strong is the evidence
This combines administrative data analysis with a teacher survey. The quality judgements are teacher self-report against a set of principles.
