Freedom, flow and fairness: exploring how children develop socially at school through outdoor play
Audio recordings of children show outdoor spaces with less adult control gave freedom for sustained play and interaction between children.
What's new
The study seeks to discover micro-level social interactions in fluid outdoor learning spaces. The child-centred method captured social interactions through mobile audio-recording. Outdoor contexts, with lower levels of adult presence and control, were associated with freedom for children to engage in sustained inter-child play and interaction.
